THE STATE OF THE ART OF MAGIC AND THE FUTURE OF MAGIC
Magic is an art that has evolved exponentially. In the last decade there has been more tv shows on magic than combined in history. Magicians have captalised on the media even if they don’t have any talent or real expertise. Masked magicians have so called exposed secrets of magic. The internet has leveled the field. Videos by the millions show so called magic and with most of them being low quality hacks. There are many quotes I could include here but I won’t for the sake of originality. That is one of the biggest problems with a lot of the magic is that they are not original.The true art of magic is relative to the practical applied theories of art and magic. If you are new in magic or have been doing it your whole life there is always room for improvement. The first step to discovering your niche in magic is to know yourself and be yourself. To begin to find your signature pieces you need to break away from the beaten path. Ask yourself some very real questions like would I really do this effect if I was performing for the most distinguished people on earth. Street magic is supposed to be the newest thing even though that was the first place it started. Call it what you want it is always magic and that is another problem with the value we and or are audiences place on it depends on perception. What magic needs is not another magician it is someone who truly understands and has true fine art magic. Most magicians these days if you ask them who were there influences will say some of the magicians that they watched on tv ( I won’t mention their names because I have no respect for their so called magic)not all of them, just most of them. I was fortunate to have seen and influenced by some of the old school professional magicians like Johnny Paul, Jimmy Grippo, Lou Lancaster, Mike Skinner, Paul Harris and several others. I say this not to name drop but to let you know magic has been evolved by these and several other master magicians that we stand on the shoulders of. Most magicians today have no clue about the true art. We see jugglers calling themselves magicians and hacks calling themselves masters. When researching old magic books to build a foundation I asked a friend of mine how many books would you recommend as a good foundation for beginners. I was thinking of about 20 in my mind and Gary Darwin (the eldest LV resident magician) said about 60 to start.You see most of these new kids calling themselves magicians don’t respect these elder magicians and let alone even know who they are. If you are a beginner magician who is looking for magic book recommendations I will guide you to the superior titles. I have developed my own system for teaching fine art magic.
